I looked into the problem and found out that it is a problem in windows xp with pci cards and scsi device pci cards. Here is the solution for those of you that may experience that. The fix works, I know as I am living proof! Why do I get the message "data is invalid" when installing a device driver under WindowsXP? This error appears to be due to a protection problem in the Windows registry and can occur with a variety of drivers sound cards and SCSI drivers have been reported.
To fix this problem, go to Start, Run Under each of these folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to install. Close Regedit and then continue with the installation of your device. I hope this information helps someone out there! Yes, i heard lot of website providing the same method of solution, but when i use regedit, there is not "permission" button in it.
Hence the solution is not workable for me althought i am facing the same problem as mentioned. In Windows run regedt As a result, attempts to install drivers later are not successful. Thank God for this thread!!!!!!! Thank you both! Awhile ago I had a problem installing a soundblaster card, about a year ago and was never able to get it to install.
My motherboard has 5. I just bought a wireless Zonet g card and was recieving these errors while trying to install, Code 1, invalid I have been looking through threads on problems with the driver for this chipset but found nothing.
Then I came across this last post with the problems that the leadtek card has. Uvcourse I have a leadtek A I downloaded the patch from the link you provided, microsoft website and then attempted to re-install the driver for the pci g card. It works!!!!!!!!! Thank you again for putting your knowledge into this thread. Greatly appreciated!!!! Many Thanks for the advice Many thanks to all subscribers to this thread.
I too experienced this problem when installing a network card. Luckily that wasn't necessary in the end thanks to you all and Google for finding this thread! I've printed out the Microsoft Knowledge Sheet to show computer repairman as well.
Regards, Priya. Method works perfectly! I used the method and it worked perfectly! Thank you! I though I'd finally found a fix for this annoying problem but it doesn't work for me. Done the registry bit so any other suggestions gratefully accepted. I would really like to say a big thank you to Buzz for posting a solution that worked like a charm on my seemingly impossible graphics card installation problem.

I am having the same problem when trying to install nvidia driver which returns without opening install panel with a dialoge saying this data is invalid I have tried to carry out some of the fixes in this thread but not been succesful so any help in this matter would be appreciated Have had the same hassle for weeks. Thanks Snuffleupagus.. The drivers don't appear to be an issue and install fine for me via Device Manager. Agree with all the other commentary that Nvidia really should lift their game, especially since this one appears to be such a basic problem.
The only way I can update driver is the manual way via device manager which i do not mind doing but all the other bits that come with the driver package are not being updated and i am amazed that Nvidia after so many complaints have not sorted this problem out, i have always had nvidia card but with this nonsence and Nvidia ignoring us mean my next card upgrade i would have a long think about it which to buy as support is non excistant here In Snuffleupagus's comment, he mentioned the manual way to do it, finding where the drivers were extracted to.
Now I know i downloaded them, i just cannot find them for the life of me. I'd assume the best place to be is the GeForce Experience folder. Just point me to the right file or folder plz. But if you're getting this issue, like Sora said: windows is hosed. There are underlying problems that warrant a clean install. I was having the same Data invalid issue. I have an GT and was trying to install the drivers on a Windows 10 box. The update faild no matter how I tried to install it.
I was looking through the Services that were running on the systems and noticed all services dealing with Device I Set them to Automatic and then started them. After I started the device association, Device install and Device Management Enrollment services, my screen went blank, then came back up.
I checked the device manager and it showed the GT drivers had installed. They were out of date so I then installed the newest drivers with no issues!!! Goose42 - Thanks thanks, Win 10 key point on starting device update services worked for me.
My drives updated correctly and dual screen kick right in. Enabling these services worked for me and allowed me to install the driver from manual location!!! Feb I just tried to install the So it quits before the installer is even able to launch. I re-downloaded the file to make sure I didn't get a bad download, but the result was the same.
Then come to find out, it is the same issue with They all now tell me, "The data is invalid" before the installation process can even start. So then I thought my current driver install must be the problem. And I thought I'd do a full clean install of the new driver.
But that doesn't work either: no matter what driver I download and try to install, it tells me, "The data is invalid. So I'm now stuck without a driver and maximum screen resolution of x I'm kind of concerned the problem is form of Windows registry corruption.
But I don't know. Is there a fix for this, other than reinstalling Windows? Would appreciate any info!
