Please edit your question to include the output of running java -version in a terminal? Note that I was wrong and it actually requires openjdkjre. Add a comment. Not sure if the problem is Windows XP or not. I use Chrome, usually in Incognito Mode, and windows 7 and have no issues with any Java games.
Did you check your Java Control Panel to be sure Java is enabled in all browsers? Then click on the Java Security tab. The only one you should see is the latest version 1. You will need to reboot after changing these settings. The first time you try to play a Java game, you will get the grey Java security pop-up.
Be sure to click the box in the lower left corner to stop the warning from coming up each time you try to play a Java game. If all of this does not allow you to play Java games, the issue may be with Windows XP, although I know several people who use XP and can play most if not all games.

I did not need to make any changes. I then tried something on a whim. I went to IE and checked Java there. Java said it was correctly installed. I closed out and started again.
